can one define pop music precisely? nah!
placing the finishing touches on the HOT pop package for thursday's
paper. an attemp at definition:
pop music is popular music and popularity changes like the seasons. its kind of like the oft-intricate politics within the middle school lunchroom. i compare pop music to this kid named cody who attended mattawan with me. in 7th grade, this better than average looking kid had girlfriends, played travel soccer (which was cool cuz nobody played football yet) and wore skidz. the kid was a walking pop single (“The Sign” by Ace of Bass for example). one day Cody arrived at school to a hallway full of snickering. to guy’s horror, another popular kid (probably a bit more popular) had started the rumor that cody wrapped his unit with duct tape and proceeded to wank. cody moved away to a private school less than 6 months later, clearly caused by the rumor. pop music is volatile by nautre — as in being cool flips to uncool at the turn of the radio dial. some records listed in the lineup are cool and will always be cool -- the highest level a record can climb to. also very rare. others linger around merely for kitsch value and have lost their “popularity" emblem long ago. both categories, though possessing different shelf lives, are pop.
the dice with sleeve and bee stang proved conversatinal. nice switch for the weekend’s whoring. tonite, whoring ... and yes, with you kristen.
